In light of current events, I feel led to share about them from a spiritual perspective. I think you would agree that we are experiencing a polarization of ideals and beliefs like we have never seen before in this country. What are you feeling when you think about where we are as a country or where we are heading? Anger? Frustration? Fear? Anxiety? I understand because I have found myself emotionally caught up in the toxic atmosphere we are experiencing and have experienced for years. I am even guilty of allowing these past two months to distract me from my focus on the Lord from time to time. However, as I have prayed about what to share with you about all of this, the Lord brought the following thoughts to mind.
I first want to say that these events should be a wake-up call for every one of us because of the rise of evil we are experiencing in this country. The key question is what is my part and your part as believers during this very pivotal time in our history. What is God calling you to do to be part of the solution concerning what we are facing?
As I was thinking about these questions some weeks ago, the Lord brought a sermon to mind from 40 years ago. (I knew it had to be the Lord because most of the time I can’t remember a message from a week ago.) In this message, the pastor was telling us how the Romans conquered the world. The way they did it was to convince each Roman centurion that all they had to do was to conquer six square feet. They did not have to worry about anyone else’s six square feet but their own. The strategy being that if a centurion conquered his six square feet and the centurions right and left and in front of him and behind him conquered their six square feet, they would conquer all their enemies. And history proved that out. After being reminded of this sermon, I asked the Lord how this applies to you and me today.
The first thought He gave me was that you and I are only responsible for our own six square feet because anything beyond that is not our responsibility. What do I mean by our six square feet? It is anyone and everyone who you will be in contact with today. It can be a loved one, the checker at your grocery store or the guy on the phone from Pakistan who can barely speak English who is trying help you with your credit card bill. It is anyone you text, email or phone today. It is anyone the Lord brings to mind for you to pray for today. All of these comprise your six square feet. I am writing this to you because you are part of my six square feet.
What does it mean to conquer your six square feet? For me, it is an intentional availability and awareness of how God wants to express Himself and work through me with everyone in my six square feet today. My prayer every morning is this, “Lord, work through me to draw to yourself the people in my six square feet today. Give me your words to speak or write. I seek you to flow your life, your truth and most importantly your love through me to all those who come into my six square feet today. Impact our culture through me for divine good.”
The key words in conquering your six square feet are “intentionality and awareness.” Awareness in that we must be very aware of the fierce battle we face today and every day. A battle not only for the soul of this country but each individual soul we come in contact with. Intentional in that we must be willing, focused and determined to conquer (in Christ) our six square feet every moment.
I share this because I have heard from too many believers who have either hunkered down in their spiritual bunkers, caves or Lay-Z-Boys hoping things will magically improve or they are being distracted/angry about the political/cultural situation. The good news is that God is faithful because He is continually calling us back to Himself and His truth. He is calling us out to conquer our six square feet because that is all we can impact.
Focusing on things we cannot control is a tool of the enemy to keep our eyes off Jesus. When I look around Christendom today, I see people who want to control what is out of their control or are not believing they can make a difference. Both are dangerous because they play right into the hands of Satan.
Think about it. If Satan can persuade you that you are of little value in winning the battle then why even fight? His greatest fear is that you know, believe and engage the Spirit’s power in you to influence, impact and even change everyone who comes into your six square feet. He cannot afford for you to conquer your six square feet because he knows what will be the result if enough believers choose to do so. Do we not have the power in us that raised Jesus from the dead, created the heavens and the earth and is holding our universe together? Can’t that power defeat our enemy, draw people to Christ and transform hearts through us?
Even though we know this is scripturally true, do we walk in it and think about it in our daily encounters? If so, let us intentionally, faithfully and continuously pray that the Holy Spirit will impact everyone we come in contact with today because God is calling you this moment to conquer, through Him, your six square feet. Why? Because we know the only solution to evil in our culture and the world is Jesus Christ.
Therefore, please know that you are not alone. You are part of a vast spiritual army. A vital and essential part. Since we are a spiritual army, let’s think and act like one. Because if we do, then I can count on you and others like you to be on my right and my left, in front of me and behind conquering their six square feet. If we do, no man or Satanic plot, will ever stop or defeat us. That is why today, I choose to conquer my six square feet. Will you conquer yours?
“Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
1 Timothy 6:12
“But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.”
